I got this Idea when a dear friend was reading and telling me about a chapter from Douglas Hofstadter's "Mind's I"..
It suggests "what if the genes were the living intelligent beings and they make us up, as exteriors to protect themselves.."...oh well! can't explain it myself, guess I'll go and read the book myself...in the mean time, This is the gene/strain that controls all and was lost to all knowledge, so now it stays secrectly...survives...
